How to check remote job time zone overlap before you apply (2026)
Here is the easy idea first: a remote job still has a clock. Before you apply, turn the team's core hours into your own hours, and check them in both clock seasons. Late October is a good week to learn this, because the gap between Europe and the US moves twice in eight days.
This is a job-seeker piece. For country and authorized-to-work language, use How to tell if a remote job will hire you from your country (2026). For the five card filters, use How to filter remote jobs before you apply (2026). For how to read a board itself, use How to pick a remote job board in 2026. For cameras and keystroke scores, use How to ask about monitoring before you apply to a remote job (2026). For client-contract risk, use How to ask who the client contract is before you take a remote job (2026). For remote that might turn into office, use How to tell if a remote job is really remote (or office later) (2026). For scams and fake recruiters, use How to spot a fake remote job before you apply (2026). For whether a remote rule will last, use How to check if a remote job's WFH policy will stick (2026).

The clocks move this month
Most of Europe turns its clocks back one hour on Sunday, 25 October 2026, according to timeanddate.com. Most of the US and Canada do the same one week later, on Sunday, 1 November 2026 (timeanddate.com, US Naval Observatory). Many countries don't change clocks at all in 2026, including Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and China, while most of Australia moved its clocks forward on 4 October (timeanddate.com).
So the gap between you and your team is not one fixed number. Three quick examples:
- London and New York: usually 5 hours apart. From 25 October to 1 November, only 4.
- Bogotá and New York: 1 hour apart right now. From 1 November, the same time.
- Sydney and New York: Sydney is 15 hours ahead right now. From 1 November, 16.
If a job asks for “overlap with Eastern time,” the hours you actually work can shift by an hour twice a year, even if you never touch your own clock.
What the job description is really asking
Overlap language comes in a few shapes. Read for:
- Core hours: “available 10am to 2pm ET.” This is the clearest kind. You can do the math.
- Minimum overlap: “at least 4 hours of overlap with CET.” Ask which 4 hours, and whether they are fixed.
- A region that is really a clock: “worldwide, US hours.” That is a location rule wearing a clock.
- Async-first: most work happens in writing, with few live meetings. Ask how many live calls a week there really are.
- On-call or support shifts: a rotation can land in your night even when the day job fits.
None of these are bad. They just tell you what time your workday starts and ends, and that matters more than the word “remote.”
How to do the math in three steps
- Write their hours with the zone. “10am to 2pm ET,” not just “10 to 2.”
- Convert to your city, twice. Once for today and once for after the next clock change on either side. A free converter like timeanddate.com does this in a minute.
- Picture a normal Tuesday. If the overlap starts at 3am or ends at midnight for you, decide now if you can live with that for a year. Do not find out after three interview rounds.
Example: core hours of 10am to 2pm ET land at 9am to 1pm in Bogotá right now, and 10am to 2pm from 1 November. In London they land at 3pm to 7pm most of the year, and 2pm to 6pm for that one week in between.
Three questions to ask early
Ask in the first recruiter chat, or in email if there is no chat:
- Which hours: What are the team's core hours, and in which time zone?
- How fixed: Do those hours stay the same when the clocks change, or does the team shift with its home city?
- What else: Is there an on-call rotation, a weekly all-hands, or a standup I'd need to join live?
Write down the answers. A team that can name its hours is a team that has thought about people in other zones.
How this fits the other remote filters
Run overlap next to the filters you already use:
- Real job, real employer.
- Card eligibility (country / region).
- Actually remote (not hybrid dressed as remote).
- Salary you can see.
- Overlap you can live with, in both clock seasons.
- Employment type that works where you live.
- Monitoring you can live with.
- Client / contract risk you can live with.
- Office-later risk you can live with.
- Policy-stability risk you can live with.
Eligibility asks whether they can hire you where you live. Overlap asks what time your day starts once they do. A role can clear both and still wear you out if the meetings land in your night.
What Remote Army shows today
Remote Army is a curated 100% remote board. Seekers are free forever. Cards show the hiring region, like USA Only, Europe, or Latin America. Search has a time zone option with an overlap tolerance of plus or minus 2 or 4 hours, and you can also browse jobs by location.
That narrows the list. It does not know about the on-call rotation or the standup that keeps creeping earlier. You still read the job description and ask. That is the honest row.
Do the clock math once, in both seasons. Then apply on Remote Army.
